Over the past two weeks we've heard all about the numerous connections between Pittsburgh and the Arizona Cardinals, and there are plenty. So many, in fact, that the Cardinals are jokingly referred to as "Pittsburgh west" by Steelers fans.
As it turns out, there's one more connection between the NFC Champions and the steel city, and it involves, perhaps, the best player taking part in Sunday's game -- wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald was a standout receiver at the University of Pittsburgh from 2002-2003, and left as one of the best players in the history of a program that can boast names such as Dan Marino, Tony Dorsett, Hugh Green and Mike Ditka.
As a Pittsburgh native -- and one that did not have the luxury of seeing the likes of Marino and Dorsett play at Pitt -- I can say with a great deal of confidence that Fitzgerald was the single most dominating college football player I ever watched on a weekly basis. Catches like the one shown above were routine.
When all was said and done, Fitzgerald took home the Biletnikoff and Walter Camp awards during the 2003 season, set an NCAA record with a touchdown catch in 18 consecutive games, and narrowly missed out on winning the 2003 Heisman Trophy, losing out to Oklahoma quarterback Jason White in what was one of the greatest injustices in the history of the award.
On Sunday, the fans that grew to love Fitzgerald's acrobatics in college will be hoping they never have to hear his name called.
On the plus side for Steelers fans, I'm guessing Ike Taylor and Troy Polamalu are slightly better in coverage than the two Texas A & M defenders in the video posted above.
